Border Collies are considered to be one of the smartest dog breeds. The general belief is that a Border doesn't need to be told how to do this or that thing. Just say when to do it. These dogs are extremely intelligent and even tend to get manipulative, if you allow it. High trainability rate is a hallmark of Border Collies.

During the independence period (3-6 weeks), Border Collie puppies are capable of learning first commands and they respond to their names. If encouraged and given enough training, Border Collies can make excellent swimmers and climbers. Because of their inborn workaholic nature, they will be grateful for giving them much exercise.

Rough training doesn't work out with Border Collies. They tend to react in an aggressive or frightened manner. Fair play or treat training will give wonderful results. Border Collies do very well in agility, frisbee, flyball, obedience and other competitive dog sports. They can be specially trained to become search and rescue dogs and drug detection dogs. The Border Collie is successfully used as a pet-therapy dog.

Border Collies Puppies - Are They Difficult to Care For?

Border Collies are called low-maintenance dogs. Their coat sheds in spring and in fall. At this point, a Border Collie might need more attention than usual. Normally, the Border Collie's coat needs being brushed twice a week. You should clip the dog's toenails when necessary. Regular bathing is also needed.

A newborn Border Collie puppy is weak and fully dependent. It is susceptible to overheating and chilling. Therefore, the litter must be kept in a comfortable warm place. As the puppies are born blind with their eyelids fused together, they must be well protected from very bright lights. When the puppies start opening their eyes at about 12 days old, their vision in rather limited and they can only see some light.

Young puppies are very touch sensitive and a warm, soft and cozy place to lie in must be provided for their comfort. Early grooming is preferable to begin at the age of 2 weeks. Since little Border Collies can injure their mother with their nails, they should be clipped regularly.
