Border Collies Puppies - Exercise Needs
Border Collies prove to be very agile and active dogs since the early age of 4 weeks. They need plenty of exercise to maintain their physical and mental health. The Border Collie is the wrong dog for couch potatoes. It needs an active and enthusiastic owner, who will go jogging, swimming and playing with it. Among other Border's favorites are running with a bicycle, playing fetch and hiking.
Two 40-50 minute walks every day together with 20-30 minute training sessions may keep a Border Collie satisfied, but it is far from getting it exhausted. Border Collies are generally healthy. There are some potentially serious heritable diseases found in the breed, though. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Hip Dysplasia (HD), Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) are among them. Border Collie puppies and their parents are to be tested for these diseases. For instance, the Border puppy is normally tested for CEA at 5-7 weeks. A 2-year-old Border Collie is tested for HD.
OFA (the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) evaluated the Border Collies from 1974-2000 and reports 12.6% rate of affected Borders. In some cases, these diseases may be quite manageable, however, a warning against buying a puppy whose parents were not tested and didn't get the corresponding certificate is given.
Border Collies Puppies - Famous Dogs of the Past
There are several legendary Border Collies, who are thought to hand down the best features of the breed to their descendants and form the exterior, the temperament and the talents of the Border Collie. They are Old Hemp, Old Kep, Fly, Craig, and Wartime Cap. Wartime Cap is known to be the father of 188 registered puppies. There are other famous dogs as well.
Their performance at trials was almost always a sensation. Border Collies of the present are believed to have inherited the highly praised herding skills from them.
